Last Dawning

Through the cold, through the night
We huddled, we shuddered.
Alone and together,
We hoped for that first shining light.

Through the fog, through the fray
We stumbled, we faltered.
Losing strength and will,
We hoped for that first shining ray.

Through the pain, through the hail
We bled, we fell.
Standing and surging,
We hoped for that first glowing way.

Through the thunder, through the spray
We staggered, we led.
Crawling and sprawling,
Yet we hoped for that first blissful day.

In the silence, dark and fright
We sorrowed, we prayed.
That the sun would be gentle,
On this, the last dawning day.
